- Actually, Play Inc. is the merging of three companies, or entities,
- or groups (clans? gangs? tribes?)
-
- Ya gotcher ex-Newtek people (Montgomery, Randall, Kiki, all the
- engineers and coders). Ya gotcher Digital Creations people, and
- ya gotcher uh.. can't remember the name of the co. but they're
- in Sacramento too (near Digital) and they're the hardware co.
- who designed all the guts for Digital's DCTV, genlocks,
- Kitchen-Sync, Video Slot Box, and etc.
-
- And to Bob Turk who opined here earlier that since I lived in
- Sacto back in '89 I had probably visited Digital, yes, that
- is true. I went to their offices in Folsom (?) once or twice.
- They had a huge place with only 12 people in it and a lot of
- empty space which I imagined is quite filled now that they
- have merged these outfits together.
-
- Personal Opinion Mode ON:
-
- Companies with Amiga-savvy like Play are not doing the rebirth of
- the Amiga market much if any good by refusing to jump on the
- bandwagon and port their software back to the Amiga. It was the
- Amiga that made these people rich to begin with (the tales of
- the Acura NSXs and Ferraries parked outside NewTek's Topeka KS
- building are not r00merz).
-
- A lot of companies voiced a "wait and see" attitude when Escom
- bought out the corpse of Commodore.
-
- In my opinion the time to wait and see is over and it's now the
- time to put up or shut up, to be blunt.
-
- Now I'm sure that Play's beancounters sat down and tried to
- figure out how many man-hours oftime it'd take to do an Amiga
- package of Snappy, and how many they think they'd sell, and
- then decided it wasn't worth it. Maybe yes, maybe no. Kermit
- Woodall (Nova Design) obviously thinks it's worth it and there's
- a successful guy with a successful company who makes and sells
- ONE product, like Play Inc., and his guys live off it. They got
- to quit their "day jobs" and become Nova Design full time, and
- they've never wavered from their Amiga-only philosophy.
- Now I don't think Kermit has been shopping for an NSX, but
- he's not eating dog food either.
-
- ImageFX has been favorably compared with Photoshop, the holy
- grail of image processors. How many people do you suppose sit
- in cubicles coding for Photoshop? Dozens? Hundreds?
- It ain't the number of bodies you throw at a project. All it takes
- is a couple if they're very talented.
-
- So listen up, all you companies out there who used to make
- Amiga stuff and then defected to the PC or Mac markets and took
- a "wait and see" attitude about the Amiga....
-
- The Amiga is back. It's in good hands. They're making them
- and selling them. And we want new products to use on our Amigas.
- So stop sitting on the fence and get busy.
